What is DMSO and 11 Great Ways to Use It

Share with Friends

Several years ago I was plagued with back pain when I read about DMSO. Many people have recently discovered what DMSO does for pain. This miracle substance was first discovered in the early 1800s by a Russian chemist and has been used over the years for many different applications.

DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) is derived from dimethyl sulfide, a by-product in the manufacturing of paper products from Pine trees. It is widely used to replace sulfur in the human body. It is also used as a pain remedy. DMSO loves to eat up the free radicals in your body that cause inflammation. Rather than masking the pain, DMSO actually reduces inflammation and prevents free radical damage.

DMSO’s uses are seemingly endless in the area of pain management. People who have been using the solvent are also reporting other health improvements that they were not expecting. DMSO has been used successfully in conjunction with the following diagnosis:

  • Arthritis
  • Immune System Disorders like MS and Lupus
  • Atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries)
  • Cataracts, Eye Inflammation, Retinol Disease, Macular Degeneration
  • Herpes and Shingles
  • Interstitial cystitis (painful bladder condition) FDA approved use
  • Scleroderma (hardening of the skin)
  • Wound Care
  • Psoriasis, Eczema and other skin disorders
  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s

Why Should I Try DMSO?

Our soil has been depleted of life-giving sulfur. This has caused us to be deficient. Sulfur can be found in almost every cell and is very important to maintain good health. Sulfur is the third most abundant mineral element found in our bodies.

Low sulfur levels in the body have been linked to many health issues including low levels of Glutathione. Glutathione has protective role against oxidative and free radical damage and its potential to enhance the immune function. Insulin disorders, inflammation, immune system disorders and weak joints are just a few of the areas that DMSO can help.

As a supplement, sulfur is available in two forms: dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). DMSO is the liquid form and MSM comes in a crystal form or powder. Used together you can have a powerful antioxidant that can help with free radical damage and inflammation.

MSM for joint pain

If you decide to purchase DMSO you will want to get 99.99% Pure Pharmaceutical Grade DMSO in a glass bottle or jar. In that form you will want to dilute it with distilled water. Veterinarians also use DMSO to help with pain management. Often used with horses and other animals it is most likely industrial grade and should not be used by humans.

Always get DMSO in a glass bottle
Always store DMSO in glass

How Do I Use DMSO?

DMSO comes in a liquid form. It can be taken internally with an IV or orally and may also be used topically. You will find it for sale in its pure liquid form or with another substance like Aloe Vera. If you purchase it in its pure liquid form you will want to dilute it. Depending on what you are using it for, many will add essential oils, distilled water or Aloe Vera.

You can purchase DMSO at local health food stores and on Amazon. I personally have it in 2 forms. There is a pure liquid form in a glass bottle. It can be taken orally or topically that can be diluted with distilled water or other substances. Then I have a jar that is a 70/30 dilution with Aloe Vera that can go on topically.

You can test your liquid DMSO for purity when it arrives. Pure DMSO will crystalize below 66F. Just put your bottle in the refrigerator over night and you will see crystals form. To warm it up just run the bottle under warm tap water.

DMSO can be irritating to the skin. You will not want to put it on at full strength as it can cause redness and itching. Even diluted you will have an itching sensation for about 15 minutes after application. Repeated use can also dry the skin.

This is a small price to pay for a natural supplement that has so many benefits. Prescriptions and over the counter pain medications that are wreaking havoc on our bodies.

How does DMSO Work?

DMSO is a carrier compound. DMSO has the ability to rapidly penetrate the skin. This also means that it opens a gateway for other substances to enter the body through the skin.

Because it is a carrier, you must use DMSO on clean skin and not have it come in contact with any other substances such as your clothes or furniture. The DMSO will carry whatever it touches right through your skin. That includes dirt and chemicals that you do not want inside your body.

Once it is in your system it attaches itself to the free radicals and eliminates them.

DMSO has the ability to break through the blood-brain barrier. It is being studied in patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia. This property has allowed for its use in drug therapies. DMSO is water-soluble. It can carry the drugs to areas that it can not normally be reached without doing any damage.

Side Effects of DMSO

DMSO can have a couple of minor side effects that can be annoying but are manageable.

DMSO Can Cause You to Smell

Many people report that their breath and body odor will start to smell like garlic or oysters. From my research, holistic health professionals, state that it is their opinion that this happens when you have more toxins. Others report that it only happens when you take it internally. Either way, you can manage the odors with peppermint gum and essential oils.

I have no idea if it is the toxins, but it is something that can be an issue for a few days after your last application or dose. The problem with it is that you can not smell it on yourself, so you will need to have a friend or a spouse keep an eye on it for you.

DMSO Is Itchy

When I used it on my back it was a struggle. Not only did I have to lay on my stomach to make sure nothing was touching the DMSO, like clothing or bedding, it also made me itch like crazy. Some say that this goes away in time. I was using a 70/30 ratio with Aloe Vera which did not dry quickly and is pretty strong. At a 50/50 ratio of DMSO and distilled water, it dried faster so it made it more manageable.

Supplement with Minerals

Many holistic health practitioners recommend that you supplement with magnesium or Trace Minerals when using DMSO. Many people will mix DMSO with Magnesium oil which is also anti-inflammatory.

When starting with DMSO it is important to start slow and allow your body to adjust.

11 Great Ways to Use DMSO

  1. MSM and DSMO used together are a powerful antioxidant and pain reliever.
  2. Essential oils used with DMSO go deeper into your cells and can penetrate the blood brain barrier.
  3. Detox your liver with Castor Oil and DMSO.
  4. 20% DMSO and 80% distilled water eyedrops can improve many eye diseases such as cataracts. Castor Oil in the eyes before bed can also help to soften cataracts.
  5. DMSO contains oxygen so it is antimicrobial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. You can use it for toe fungus, athletes foot, acne and other skin conditions.
  6. DMSO on your scalp may help regenerate hair growth in some people.
  7. Eliminate bruising and scars. I noticed immediate results on my newer scars. On my older scars it took about 6 weeks . Apply your 70/30 solution 2-3 times per day for best results.
  8. A teaspoon of DMSO with orange juice taken daily can improve your overall health.
  9. I have seen many testimonials from people who have suffered from strokes who have taken DMSO internally and REVERSED the damage if done soon enough.
  10. Use a 20% solution of DMSO in conjunction with Vitamin C in your skin care regimen for younger looking skin and wrinkles.
  11. A 50/50 solution of DMSO and distilled water around the temples and base of the neck has been reported to stop migraines if used at the onset.

I noticed that DMSO diluted w/ Distilled H20 @ 20/80 can be used as eye drops. Interesting. I use 15% Colloidal Silver mix as eye drops. I will now combine CS with DMSO.
I just started use DMSO with CS and Pure Aloe for neuropathy no results of signifigance yet.
I also have nebulized DMSO with CS and it has helped.

I have used it in my eyes as well. My husband can’t because he had lenses added to his eyes. For neuropathy, have you considered PEMF, like BEMER?

I have also used DMSO with oil pulling with great success. Brush your teeth first, floss and ferociously swish for a minute to remove debris -do in your normal routine order. Then afterward for oil pulling, we generally use a base of 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, 2 drops of oil of oregano (start with 1 though, and can add different eos, but start with 1 drop of each only), 4 drops of DMSO. Start slowly. Swish for 10 mins, spit out liquid that acquires in the mouth. Can build up to oil pulling for 45 mins. Brush again once done.

Hello. This is all great info and I never knew about the dangers of using DMSO with silicon breast implants and now I’m freaked out to say the least after reading all these comments. I have been using for neck, back and foot pain so what are my chances that I just caused myself more problems? Are there any reports or studies on this? Thank you.

    1. Tricia Snow Avatar

Hi there. Not that I am aware of. I would pay close attention to any changes to your breasts. I would also ask my doctor if there are any checkups you should be getting to ensure there are no ruptures. I am unfamiliar with breast implant follow-up checks, but I would imagine that should be a thing to do.

I don’t understand how it can have all these benefits without doing something to the healthy cells and tissue also. for example could the reason it eases pain be in part because it”eats” the connective tissue so it feels like there is no more pain?
Has there been any studies actually showing it doesn’t touch health tissue?

        1. Tricia Snow Avatar

No it eats the free radicals that cause the pain. DMSO has a low toxicity to cells.

Here is what I copied from a study with the link for you to review. There are also other studies cited in the article.

Despite its well-documented capacity to dissolve a wide range of chemical compounds, further investigations regarding DMSO’s pharmacological activities and reliable safe use concentrations are required. For this purpose and regarding previous studies that used DMSO doses ranging from 0.5 to 40% v/v, the main objective of this study was to verify DMSO concentrations that are not toxic and do not modify the activation of peripheral blood cells on in vitro cultures. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6150313/#:~:text=Kloverpris%20et%20al.,cell%20death%20after%20seven%20days.

I have a question. I do castor oil packs and love them! I want to try with DMSO but I’m confused. I bought my DMSO 25% solution from jacoblabs.com (the guy who worked with Dr.Jacobs who discovered it) and it comes in a plastic bottle? Would that be dangerous to use with a pack? I currently just rub on sore joints and discs from disc degeneration and have no had results.

    Thank you for your advice!

          1. Tricia Snow Avatar

I would try to find a FB group about the Diatomaceous earth. I have taken it internally, and I think for scabies specifically, you would make a paste and cover the areas, but I am not really sure.

If you were looking at Adrenal Fatigue and going to try the Adrenal Cocktail could you also use DMSO internally and if you had fillings and shoot it down your throat would you dilute it with distilled water 50/50 or mix it with Orange Juice Thank You !

Are the filings mercury or silver? I would not care if they were silver. If you have mercury I will not risk the DMSO touching that.

What carrier oils can be used with DMSO?
I have Grapeseed oil. Is this a good option?

      1. Tricia Snow Avatar

Hi there, so DMSO is the carrier. Whatever you put with it, the DMSO will carry it to your cells. I would not use a carrier oil with DMSO. You can find it on AMZ with aloe vera.I have also seen it mized with essential oils like frankincense.

A few years ago I touched a pan out of the oven hot and could hear my skin sizzle. I had to keep it on ice water for hours to control the pain, and once we got home, a couple hours drive away, I cut an aloe vera leaf and put juice on it, and put DMSO 70% gel on top of that. Within 10-15 minutes, the pain was gone and I could take the cold pack off. The burn healed without any scar. I did have to reapply the aloe juice and DMSO a couple more times over the following days. It never blistered, even.

    1. Tricia Snow Avatar

Isn’t it a shame that DMSO is even being overlooked for that? A burn turned around with no blistering.

But I definitely do not want to mess with the one that is made out of titanium. Thanks so much, Bruce

If you want to use DMSO but can’t because of implants in your body like breast implants, you should consider Iodine, specifically Lugol’s Iodine which is an Iodine formulation liquid you mix with water, or the one I prefer in Pill form named Iodoral, It is effective against cancer, It regulates the rate of energy production and body weight and promotes proper growth. It improves mental alacrity and promotes healthy hair, nails, skin and teeth. It also stimulates the liver to produce the beneficial HDL cholesterol which helps to lower the LDL choleterol levels, determines the level of the metabolism, relieves pain by connective tissue inflammations in the breasts (fibrocystic breast problems), prevents thyroid gland disturbances, loosens mucus that may block the airways, is a natural anti-inflammatory and disinfection agent and offers protection against the poisonous effects of radioactive substances.

Hello! Thanks for all the great info! The problem I have is so many talk about what a miracle DMSO is, and all of its uses, but not how to use it. There are so many warnings about applying it. Supposedly, it causes and dirt, toxins, microbes, and anything else on the skin to be driven deep into your cells. Obviously, you don’t want this. So, hundreds of people say to make sure the skin is clean. But, nobody really tells you how to do this. Use soap? Won’t that leave soap residue? Some say they use Clorox wipes. Wouldn’t that leave nasty chemicals? Just purified water and a washcloth? Is that enough? I have major pain in many areas so require a lot. What about running alcohol? It should dissipate quickly. I have a feeling big pharma plays into the lack of DMSO information out there. You seem as knowledgeable as any so hopefully, you can assist with application.

    Thanks!

People take it internally to make other internal medicines more bioavailable. It also eats free radicals.

You are no bother! I would just be careful of what is in the Hemp Oil. Do you want those ingredients to enter your cells? MSM helps significantly. Just add it to hot water, let it cool and it is more absorbable, from what I have read. Holistic health is trial and error. I would also look into essential oils. Peppermint, Sweet Birch Bark, Sweet Basil, all help with inflammation and pain. There are also blends if you have access to someone who sells DoTerra or Young Living. i have used DMSO for years on everything commented above and more. Anyone wanting to learn more should review books written on subject. Dr Jacob was a friend and researched DMSO for medical uses. He lived and practiced into his 90s.
One add to health uses, as a sinus cure. I put diluted drops in my nose for immediate relief.

    1. Tricia Snow Avatar

Wow! Thank you so much for reaching out! We love it as well. It has really helped my husband with his memory. I will add the sinus relief to the article. Thanks, again Teresa!

We make a nasal spray with it, too. And a muscle spray, and a mouthwash, an antiviral/antibacterial spray… and yes, as a solvent!

          1. Tricia Snow Avatar

I mostly purchased them already made on Amazon.

How did your husband take it for memory? I want to use it for my mum who has dementia. Love your Article! Just need a few more “How to use” I also use Young Living oils and have been told that rosemary, lavender and frankincense are good for the brain. So I want to include those. I’m very hesitant to give it to her internally as I have only used it topically. I was wondering if you knew how best to use it for Dementia or could put me on to someone who would know? I’m in New Zealand on the other side of the world and our doctors have not progressed enough to use DMSO except for the FDA approved things. Any help at all would be so appreciated. I get the 70/30 pharmaceutal grade from Australia.

        1. Tricia Snow Avatar

What is the 70/30 mixed with? Unfortunately, due to lawsuits, it is tough to do “how too’s” on a blog. I am unwilling to give too much advice and hope it will cause you to research independently. I think people should know what they are doing before starting. There are groups on FB and lots of videos on YouTube. There is a DMSO roller on Amazon that my husband uses around his neck and temple to temple. Be sure to check with a medical professional before using!

Is there a book in particular you recommend?

      1. Tricia Snow Avatar

There are groups on Facebook that you can search for, but I try to stick to the studies. The products are sold on Amazon.

So I can’t use it due to breast implants : (

    1. Tricia Snow Avatar

I would never recommend using DMSO anywhere near the breast if I have breast implants. I have read where folks still use it and it was fine, but the consequences if something goes wrong are not worth it in my opinion. I would recommend looking into MSM, Glutathione, and NAC. Supplementing with those will have similar results. Maybe just not as fast or dramatic. I hope that helps!

That is so interesting that it can help with cancers. This sounds like a great product especially if it gets rid of free radicals.

How come it’s not recommended to use DMSO when you have breast implants? I have been using DMSO orally and topically for a while should I stop? What would happen?

        1. Tricia Snow Avatar

DMSO is a powerful solvent. Breast implants may be compromised with the use of DMSO if used near the implant or if DMSO comes in contact with the implant.

    1. Tricia Snow Avatar

Then MSM would probably be your next best option. I would not be comfortable recommending it to anyone who has anything foreign in their body.
