One of our favorite areas to visit are the towns of the Northeast Georgia Mountains. As you know in my article about evacuating for the hurricanes we always head to the mountains in Northeast Georgia. The reason why? Cooler weather in the summertime, pet-friendly accommodations and friendly people make it an easy choice.

What Are The Towns Of The Northeast Georgie Mountains

Northeast Georgia is a community that boasts immense natural beauty and offers a wide range of activities throughout the year. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, family vacation, or a weekend with friends, the towns of Northeast Georgia Mountains are the place to visit.

  • Clarkesville

  • Clayton
  • Hiawassee
  • Tallulah Falls
  • Lakemont

After leaving Boone Lake in Tennessee we were not ready to head back to Florida just yet. It was just too hot and I knew we wanted to play a little longer than that so we decided to spend the rest of the week in Northeast, Georgia. I called my friends at Sunburst Adventures for a reservation since we were going to be bringing Bo and I know they will allow us to bring our pets.

We arrive and there is misty rain as we enter the property. The horses have already been turned out to pasture and with the thick forest, it seems like the sun is setting even though it is only 6:30.

We head up the familiar drive and even the erosion patterns in the driveway are the same. We spot our familiar tiny cabin on the right and pull in. It is like our home away from home.

Reasons I Love This Area

Cooler temperatures are a definite here. Tennesse had its own attributes but nothing compares to living deep in the National Forest. Everything North of Sunburst Adventures is National Forest so you can really tell the difference between the temperatures because there are so many trees the air naturally stays cooler.

Driving through the winding roads the air is cool even on sunny warm days in August. The low temperatures were 66 degrees in the morning and 82 degrees during the day.

The people are amazing. Talk about Southern Hospitality! Coming from busy South Florida this is a laid back and relaxing atmosphere. And the people here are laid back as well. I tend to be a tailgater. People will pull over to let you pass because they do not want to hold you up or I was majorly annoying them. Since I drive like it is always an emergency, I have to remember to slow down and enjoy the drive.

I have never met a cranky person here. I am sure if I lived here that would not be the case all the time but during my visits, the people are always helpful and friendly. They take the time to have conversations and get to know you.

Lots to See and Do

There are several lakes, streams, creeks, waterfalls and rivers here to visit. My favorite is the great Tallulah Falls located in the Tallulah Gorge State Park. Of course, the hiking and mountain scenery is amazing as well. Many towns have historical sites to visit from the civil war. You will also find the fun tourist stuff to do like, vineyards and wineries, gem mining, white water rafting, a corn maze, Alpaca farms, horseback riding, zip-lining and ATV rentals.

You have several connecting towns of the Northeast Georgia Mountains that are fun to explore. Sunburst is located in Clarkesville. So it is an easy ride to Helen, Blairsville, Hiawassee, Clayton, Tiger, Tallulah Falls and North Carolina. These towns are all connected by scenic roads that have fantastic overlooks and views of the mountains. This is one of the reasons we stay there.

As you climb and descend the huge mountains on these roads you will be able to pull over and look at amazing mountains and lake views and will have plenty of photo opportunities as you drive through the clouds.

Of course, a favorite is Helen. The famous Alpine town where you feel like you are walking through a Bavarian village. There is a lot for visitors to encounter such as fishing, tubing, shopping, Bavarian and German-themed restaurants and food.

It is located right on the Chattahoochee River where you can watch people riding their tubes in the chilly water and navigating the rocks. Of course, there are fudge and candy shops as well. Be prepared to be thrown into a diabetic coma with their delicious treats!

Hiawassee is home to Chatuge Lake. A massive body of water that spans from Hiawassee to North Carolina. Blairsville is home to Lake Nottley. Most of the lakes here are man-made and used for electrical power. You must take a drive to Brasstown Bald. At almost 4,800 feet it is Georgia’s highest mountain. You can walk it or take a tram. There is also a small museum there.

Rabun County Lakes

All of the Rabun Count lakes connect and are located in Rabun County. These lakes are my favorite of the Northeast Georgia mountain lakes. It is beautiful to drive through there and there are waterfalls that you can stop and hike to like Angel and Panther Falls nestled in the mountains. One of the largest lakes, Lake Burton, has 62 miles of shoreline and is a 2775 Acre lake and is fed from the Tallulah River.

Be sure to stop at La Pradas Chophouse for amazing views, food and a great cocktail!
